Oil on linen on board and gloss on board (two parts)
Original size: 21 x 30 cm
Photographer: Thomas M. Wright
Thomas M. Wright’s work is concerned with the economy of gesture, built up through many vigorously painted layers: over painted, rubbed back and repeated. He is trying to catch a fleeting moment and to fix it permanently. Through this process a metamorphosis occurs between paint as a base material and painting as imaginative transformation. The surface of the painting becomes a mirror, sometimes metaphorically sometimes physically, on to which signs are inscribed for the viewer to decipher, themes of representation and recognition.
Wright graduated from Goldsmiths College, University of London, with a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art in 2004, and has a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Liverpool Art School.
