Photographer: Paul Edwards
During the last decade Edwards has undertaken a number of residencies in Ireland and the U.S. In Ireland he made a series of vertiginous paintings looking down into spaces and out to the horizon on the cliffs of County Mayo. Most of his work at residencies has, one way or another, become concerned with reconciling the presence, mass and weight of the subject with the passing of time. Edwards is interested in the notion of drawing as time based, containing time, piled up in archaeological layers like rock strata, unlike film and other more linear time based media.
Paintings and drawings by Paul Edwards have been exhibited in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, London and Ireland, including a one-person show in Exhibit E, a series of exhibitions held at eleven galleries in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the European Commission and the British Council. Most recently, in England, he has curated and taken part in the first of a number of drawing experiments and collaborations; Translations in 2011 at the University of Lincoln, Imagistic in 2012/13/14 at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff. He has exhibited work from residencies in response to considerations of place in All Over the Place in The Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery, University of Leeds, 2010, and the University of the West of England, Bristol, 2008. He has had residencies in England, the U.S., Ireland and Germany and been awarded grants by the European Union, British Council, Arts Council and Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation. A graduate of the Slade, he lives in Cardiff and is a senior lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Lincoln.
